Re: [RC] Price of horse - Bette Lamore

I've said it before and I'll say it again, a very wise person once told me a
horse is worth what the owner is willing to sell it for and what the buyer is
willing to pay-- sometimes they match-- sometimes not and who is to say who is
right?
I was offered $250,000 for Halynov two months after I'd purchased him by the Brazilians
through trainer Doug Dahman who were looking for a stallion for jumper anglo crosses-- I
turned it down and they replied-- name your price-- I repeated that he was not for sale.
Doug told a friend that they would probably go up to 500,000 and that I was nuts --- and
perhaps I was. We had just spent our life savings buying a ranch and tons of
breeding/training equipment and after the government took half the purchase price in
taxes and left me with a breeding facility with no stallion, I figured I would not come
out ahead. When we were later defrauded by realtors and lost our ranch and then our
business was being legislated out, I called Doug in desperation and choking with tears,
asked him if he knew of anyone interested-- he sneered at me and said "opportunity
knocks but once" and hung up. So what was Halynov worth?-- to me still everything
and had I not been worried about my family, I n
ever would have made that call and it was the only sales call I ever made on Hal. There is no
static "worth" to horses. I've lost sales because I priced the horse too low (to the
sheiks-- not enough money in the sale for the US broker to get his "cut") so figure it
out... Life is unpredictable and what is one man's pride is another man's cull.
So much for philosophizing tonight.

Hi all,
I've been looking at prices of endurance horses for several weeks now. I noticed
"JESTA BANDETTOBEY" (http://www.globalendurance.com/sale.html) used to be
priced at $15,000. Now he's priced at $30,000. Granting this horse has an impressive
record and probably quite capable of winning Tevis and other difficult races, my question
is: if no one bought him at $15,000, it is logical to expect someone will buy him at
US$30,000? More generally, how does one price an endurance horse like this? Any insight
would be appreciated.
Thanks very much in advance.
