I had a mare that was hard to shoe in the rear. The
farrier thought it was pain in her hocks from arthritis, so he gradually
picked up her feet and let her rest a little when it hurt her, and then would
continue on. By not pulling her feet around, and by letting her get in
the right position so he could shoe her, the problem was solved. It
always hurt her to shoe the rear, but with bute and patience, he could get the
job done. As a result of knowledgeable handling,she never developed an
attitude, or was dangerous to shoe.
