Re: [RC] Cushings, Stringhalt: hereditary or not? - Milinda EllisMary, I am a member of the Cleveland Bay Horse Society of North America's "Breed Genetics and Health" committee. To-date, we've not run across any studies that indicate anything at all about Cushings (it may be out there, and we've just not run across it yet as we haven't heard of any CBs with Cushings) but on stringhalt, I think "the jury is still out." There are many theories out there, including but not limited to: "stringhalt" could stem from an injury, stringhalt is heritable, and others that vehimently deny that. I think only time will tell (and maybe not then, either as some feel it is closely tied to EPSM and can therefore be "managed"). Our breed has survived several genetic bottlenecks, including a REALLY BAD ONE back in the late-50s to early-60s, and so our committee is very concerned about heritable disease, in addition to inbreeding and genetic diversity. Our
breed is critically endangered (less than 500 worldwide) and we certainly have to watch for things like that. That's all I can tell you so far.
