Many years ago on Tevis, Potato Richardson pulled this trick on Elwin Wines 
(from Oregon, and a past National AERC Champion).  Down in El Dorado Canyon, 
Potato was ahead and Elwin was trying desperately to catch up.  Potato just 
ducked off trail for a bit, Elwin went charging on ahead and finally arrived 
in Michigan Bluff, only to discover Potato wasn't there.  By this time, 
Elwin had burned out his horse and was pulled.  Potato came sauntering in 
after a bit, his horse looking just fine.
