Re: [RC] Drafting - any gain? - M Paul Latiolais

Motivation.

At least that is my horse's need and benefit. He is pretty lazy otherwise. When we first started this sport, my horse spent a month with Bill Basham, a trainer that Steph uses for her endurance horses. Bill thought my horse would never make it in distance riding, because the horse was so lazy on the trail by himself.

Almost 1000 competitive miles (555 endurance miles) later and counting, he goes like the devil when around other endurance horses. WITH the caveat that I have to be more mindful of the signs of fatigue. He would wear himself out, if I let him.

So as this topic has come up, maybe someone can answer something I have wondered about.

As a former cyclist, I remember the benefit to the rider or riders in back from drafting. We used to ride in a rotation so everyone would benefit part of the time.

When I was running, I think I remember reading that there was a psychological edge to be gained from drafting. You could wear down and pick off the runner ahead of you by drafting.

Other than the obvious social comfort a horse might gain by following another horse, is their any actual benefit?
