Re: [RC] camping with horses - Lynne GlazerWell, you obviously live and ride in the land of trees. :-) We have few trees at our high desert ridecamps, and in our chaparral/oak woodlands it would not be cool to have 150 people tying high lines to them or trampling their root area. In some camps it's flat out forbidden.I think horses can get into trouble no matter how they're restrained. Nothing is ideal, like most things about horsekeeping, learning what is out there, evaluating the risks and making the best decision on the part of your horses is the best we can do. I've never had trouble with my own in the portable pen, but a friend's horse freaked out in it pre-ride once and tried unsuccessfully to jump it, resulting in a laceration to her armpit, which the friend didn't find until the completion check; tough mare. We were gone on the 50 and she was waiting for the LD start, left our camp to do something/can't remember, leaving the mare saddled, bridled and unrestrained in the pen. An example of a bad choice, I would not blame the pen for that.
