The best "words" I've found to yell at a dog are - NO, GO LAY DOWN!! Works with almost all the dogs in the neighborhood. There's one little yapper that I have on occasion chased back home. I usually go to the other side of the road when I approach the homes where I know there are dogs. If they stay on there own side of the road they can bark all they want, when they come out towards me they are fair game.
