RE: [RC] Calories burned riding - Alison FarrinIts partly that you are getting older, but its also that you are in better shape. As I was carrying a 50lb bag of feed up the hill yesterday, I thought about someone who weighed 50 lbs more than me just walking up that hill. They burn a lot of additional calories just carrying around the weight! So, you get in better shape and your muscles are more efficiant and you lose the extra weight and now its A LOT harder to burn the same amount of calories. When I hardly rode for 6 weeks after breaking my leg, I lost almost all my aerobic capacity and cantering for a 2 mile stretch just about killed my lungs. I was breathing at the level that me running the same stretch today would cause. I can canter that stretch today and carry on a conversation; very little if any aerobic effort. That's why the 100+ calorie difference in the range Angie quoted. Its also a reason to cross train - you work muscles that aren't in as good of shape and burn more calories. Alison A. No matter how much I ride I have to do a lot of other exercise to not gain weight. I've come to the conclusion that trotting 10 miles - no matter what some article says - doesn't burn many calories. My office at home is three flights of steps from the ground. I must walk those 20 times a day - that doesn't help either in the weight dept. So I find myself having to run along with riding to keep my weight in line.
