RE: [RC] Diesel at $3 a gallon - heidiI've tried to justify it by saying well - many Americans hold big oil company shares in mutual funds yadda yadda yadda. But frankly I'd rather see lower prices at the pump. Well, we'd all like to see it cheaper, I'm sure. But we're in this bind for several reasons, among them our own unwillingness to explore and develop oil reserves, our lag in developing alternative power sources, our phobia of atomic solutions, etc. All of that has led to our alarming dependence on foreign oil, coming from sources that are not at all concerned about our economic health (but that's how economics work). But it could be worse--my husband commutes back and forth to Europe, and although prices there were more like 4x our fuel prices when we got married, they are still considerably more alarming than ours--haven't heard about fuel prices from him on his current trip, but when we were having our really high prices here following Katrina, the prices were still running 3x ours in Denmark. I always try to look at it in how much extra per trip it will cost me. An average endurance ride for me is about 300 miles from home, so figure a 600-mile round trip, with a truck that gets 12 miles to the gallon towing. That's 50 gallons per outing. So to put things in perspective, if the fuel prices go up by 10 cents, that will add $5 to my average ride trip. If they go up by 50 cents, that will add $25 to my average ride trip. And so forth.
