[RC] Climate response and electrolytes - Christy AdameHi Dawn,Has anyone introduced hot & humid climates factor = electrolytes? From the posts I've read, seems that a majority of the "no" e-lyte folks live in cooler climates. They don't have the 4 plus months of the "sauna/breathing thru a wet sponge heat & humidity experience" we "love & cherish" here in Texas. When I first started doing rides, I would only give 1/2 a dose (one syringe). 1)This was mostly because she was such a "pain" to electrolyte & 2) because I didn't realize that a whole "cup" of applesause + 1 scoop of e-lytes actually filled 2 1/2 syringes (another true blonde moment--sigh). When you start the ride @ 50- 60 degrees & it's 85 - 90 degrees @ noon w/ 90% humidity, drinking & 'pre' hydration cannot be an afterthought! Worrying about gut sounds: Another "discovery," is that she would pee 2 to 3 times more when I gave her Pro-Bi with the electrolyte mixture. This last ride I skipped the Pro-Bi & she was "normal." Do you think her kidneys were trying to "clear" something extra during the ride with the added Pro-Bi? Therefore; having a negative effect? Also, being a "former" runner (road races, etc...) I know that sports drinks can have a negative effect on the body (Gatorade is a classic example--it's mixed with oil--which has a "filling effect" therefore; causing you to feel less thirsty). And that you should consistently eat a good diet, not just a few days before (or during) the competition. One ridecamp post said to eat potato chips & potatoes, which I totally agree with, instead of Gatorade. Another recipe (this might be a "local" thing) is to eat fresh cut watermelon or tomatoes sprinkled with salt. That too will move sodium to positive levels and increase water intake over time in the (human) gut.
