RE: [RC] French Team - heidiDidn't I read somewhere that the French riders condition their horses without electrolytes? And also do not use them in competition? I recall reading that as well. And they are on the cutting edge of world competition. After discussing this with a veterinarian who scopes many horses, some who are racing, and under stress, his opinion is that riders should relieve the acid buildup immediately following a race and not during the race! As for acid build-up, consider that one of the best buffers is saliva--and that eating long-stemmed forage at vet checks will stimulate saliva production AND add e-lytes in a food form where they are not caustic.
