RE: [RC] Barley - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.Barley cocktail party trivia: More energy than oats, less than corn, but not by a whole lot on either count. More likely to create cecal acidosis than oats, less likely than corn. Very slightly better mineral profile than oats, way better than corn. Higher in starch than oats, thus more likely to cause problems (can you tell I like oats better) A harder grain than oats, so somewhat better feed digestibility when processed (steam rolled, etc) versus whole, but then you have rancidity issues. If you're going to feed barley at all, I prefer mixing it 45% whole oats, 35% rolled or steamed barley, 20% rolled corn. Evens out the mineral balance a bit. I don't like EVER feeding more than 2-3 pounds of grain per feeding and no more than about 5 pounds of grain a day total. If you need more calories than that to maintain condition, you should first look into feeding beet pulp and some balanced fats before loading up on tons of grain. I know, I know, Tom Ivers would have disagreed with me, but it's still my stand. Just wish he were still here to argue it with me awhile.
