RE: [RC] National Forest Land Sale - Jim HollandThat quote is true...but THAT money came from the 2000 Budget, NOT from sale of National Forest land. However, it seems that the current administration has spent a lot of money in what many feel is an inappropriate manner, building up a huge national debt, and now are willing to cash in part of our nation's "principle" by selling our public lands for this program instead of budgeting it. Note that "receipts from timber sales" have ALWAYS "fluctuated over time". Since we had a "surplus" in 2000, Congress decided to use some of that to even out the fluctuation. We no longer have a surplus....and probably will never see another one in our lifetime. Everyone will have to tighten their belt. If we can't "afford" this program, drop it along with the many others that got the ax, INCLUDING budget cuts in the FS itself. We just lost our FS office here in Blue Ridge. Toccoa district was combined with Brasstown. The same thing is going to happen with Armuchee and Cohutta. Jim, Sun of Dimanche+, and Mahada Magic Richard T. Here is an excerpt: Since 1908, 25 percent of Forest Service revenues from timber sales, mineral resources, and grazing fees, have been returned to states in which national forest lands are located to help maintain and improve local schools, roads and other activities. Because receipts from timber sales fluctuated over time, in 2000 Congress developed the "Secure Rural Schools" Act to stabilize payments to states for five years, from 2001 to 2006 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
