Re: [RC] Painful, cold fingers - Beverley H. Kane, MDI just "treated" (over the phone) another horseman for cold hands. This person has been drinking a lot of diet Coke, so I advised him to try stopping that. Caffeine in coffee and diet drinks, not so much w/ tea and chocolate, is a potent vasoconstrictor (shutting down blood vessels). Same for cold ("common cold/flu") preparations with "speed" in them, nicotine, and for some people, a high sugar diet. Working with hands high above the heart will make for poorer circulation too. It might help to stand on stool for grooming and barn chores, with hands around heart level. Consider whether you are tightly gripping tools w/o a break to allow hands to refill. You can also learn to dilate your blood vessels in the extremities using biofeedback or autogenic (meditation) techniques. The other suggestions wrt loose, thick woollen gloves w/ insulating air space are also good.
