Re: [RC] Founder question - Helen and Larry McMasterAre you aware of the Equine Cushings/Insulin Resistance group onYahoo? That list has been a great help to me in the effort to keep our two sound. Mary Thanks to someone on Ridecamp, I did join this group a couple of years ago - the strict diet - low sugar content hay, no grain or treats did make a difference. I am not sure what caused the last episode, as there was a foot of snow on the ground and I know she did not get anything extra. Ember started showing signs of insulin resistance several years before her diagnosis - the cresty neck and fat at her tailhead, etc. I had all kinds of blood tests and some other things done as I knew something was just not right. During that time, she was ridden regularly and did not founder until I had to take 3 months off for some surgery. It wasn't until her second episode that I learned about the Cushings/Insulin Resistance list and made the connection. I had to beg my vet to check her blood for sugar content and insulin (he did not believe horses could have this) - even on the 'diet' her insulin levels were out of sight. She did not grow much of a winter coat, - it was short, fine and shiny and she was never blanketed. Helen, Ont. Canada Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
