Re: [RC] Vet Check holds - Truman PrevattWinter, Randy or Cheryl wrote:When we started the Goethe ride in '97 we had a situation on the second day trail where the distance from the last planned check to the finish was 18 miles. I was not that comfortable with it but there no place to have a real hold.most rides now have gate into hold. The head vet and I talked and he thought they should at least have a stop of some sort. After going over the logistics it was just as easy to have a gate into a short hold as it was anything else. Where the trail crossed a road we could get in water, have enough space for a few horses, a vet a pulse person and a timer. So that's what we did. In reality at 42 miles in the ride the horses are spread out. We ended up with a check and a 15 minute hold. The 15 minutes gave the horses time to drink eat a little grass and see the vet. Of course a rider could stay longer if they wanted. There wasn't enough room for a "trot out" so the vet made the riders trot out as they went out to make sure they weren't lame. It worked just fine and in retrospect wasn't any more difficult that just a stop. It also didn't require a lot of space or much logistics setting it up.
