RE: FW: Re: [RC] [RC] re: mares and girls - heidi

Ginny says:
Actually, the cause of PMS in humans, and "marishness" in horses is quite
similar -- it has to do with nutritional defitiencies that make it difficult
for the person/horse to produce the correct amount of the correct hormones
(these are manufactured, internally) at the righ time.

As an equine nutritionist, I have eliminated "marishness" in many horses,
through changes in diet.

Healthy mares handle their heat cycle without distress or difficulty; only
mares with health problems have difficulties that affect their disposition.

Well, Ginny, you finally got one (almost) right. A great many healthy
mares do indeed handle their heat cycles with absolutely no distress or
difficulty.

However, that said, while nutrition certainly plays a role, the sorts of
health problems that cause issues in mares include a whole gamut of
things, ranging from ovarian and pituitary tumors right on down to
uterine infections. I'd wager that real equine nutritionists (like Sue
G who actually has some credentials along those lines) would be the last
to suggest that all such problems are eliminated by good nutrition,
despite the importance that nutrition plays in the health of all of us,
and despite the excellent nutritional advice that they give to this list
from time to time.

And that said, some mares, even healthy ones who manufacture the right
hormones at the right times, simply are more affected by estrogen than
others. Some simply have more volatile dispositions than others (as do
stallions and geldings) so that any changes in their lives are more apt
to trigger behavioral reactions. One size does not fit all, even for
equine psyches...
