[RC] re: mixing mares and geldings--question to other RC horse experts - Pvan19
I agree with you Matt, I think horse PERSONALITY is much more important
than their sex!
I have a very stallionly gelding who was castrated very late - lived with
other stallions & geldings before and after castration, no problem. Since
being castrated he has lived with several different mares as well
as gelding ponies - absolutely no problem. Why?
This horse has a very strong personality - as long as he lives with horses
that have a strong personality too they will find a balance and establish a
hierarchy among themselves. When he lived for a short while with an old very
timid mare she had a nightmare time - he constantly moved her around, would try
to mount her when she was in heat.. so we moved her to live with a couple of
other mares where she was still dominated but not to the extent of suffering
from it.
My three year old stallion lives with two geldings - they are great
together for the same reason.. the two geldings are retired riding ponies only
half his size but have very strong personalities so the hierarchy works
great. He's very boisterous & playful but the ponies will him
when to stop even though they cannot keep up with him in terms of
speed or agility.( arab versus shetland, quite a sight!)
Ofcourse you need to be very careful the first few days when you introduce
a new horse and while they work out who's boss, second boss etc..but that's
obvious...and independent of sex in my humble opinion.
so for Jill - find a horse your mare gets along with - put them together
and you'll see within 30 minutes whether or not that's the case - they will be
happier and much easier to handle, feed etc. if their personalities are matched
rather than having one horse all the way at the bottom of the hierarchy.

Jill, It depends on the horses.I used to keep my
Stallion,BEZT SPLASH with our geldings.Never a problem.I have a mare in with 2
geldings and a John Mule.No problems.Quite frankly ,I found the arogance of miss
45 year horse expert offensive. If you knew me ,you'd know I am almost impossible
to offend. Good Luck, Matt

Do other experts out there think this is for real stuff? I'm looking for a
pasture mate for my mare here in Berkeley/Orinda and was thinking a gelding as
she's (my mare) so dominant: am I setting myself up for a fall here? This
sounds pretty
terrifying.
