Carol IL. This is called "silver dapple" and is a dilution gene that affects only the color black, causing it to dilute to a chocolate color with lighter points (mane, tail) It exists in pony breeds, walking horses, Morgans, and Rocky Mountain horses. Some confuse it with smutty palomino or liver chestnut, although a horse that is a silver dapple and displays those characteristics will either be heterozygous or homozygous for black. The mane and tail usually end up darkening with age, but some breeders dye it to maintain the "look". A horse that is homozygous for this sometimes carries something called "ASD" which is an eye disorder. I believe the Rocky Mountain registry has had some issue with this in the past, but do not know all the details. THe Rocky Mountain registry calls these hroses "chocolate" and the gene on a bay horse (which looks really interesting, btw) they call "red chocolate". =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
