I did the very same thing with my first horse when I was a teenager.  He was 
a TB that loved to run - and that gave me a real fear of losing control. 
So, we compromised and I would let him go as fast as he wanted to - as long 
as he didn't break out of the trot.  I had the fastest trotting TB around! 
And we both enjoyed our outings together.
