Back when horses seldom made their teens and were used as tools rather than toys, horses were started as soon as possible to get the maximum use out of them. They died before chronic physical issues had a chance to run their course. Yes, it applies to people as well. The damage done to kids who are drilled to become future super athletes is yet to be discovered. Horses cantering in the pasture are doing so totally under their own direction, balance and weight. Put a 150 pound rider on them and the kinetic energy factor alone is quite demanding even when not taking the human's balance influence and control into effect.
