[RC] trot/canter - mkrumlawI don't believe you should use the trail to *teach* your horse the correct leads and diagonals. The horse isn't learning anything other than to do what is the most comfortable for him/her on the trail. If they are more comfortable on one lead, that's the lead they're going to pick up most of the time. Eventually you'll end up with asymmetries and down the road lamenesses if the horse doesn't have the structure to support the over use. Most believe that horses are born naturally one sided because of their position in the womb. Even as youngsters they're going to have a favorite canter lead or diagonal. Without formal training they are naturally going to use the stronger diagonal more than the weaker side. Remember horses don't run 100 miles in the wild, that's a human game. If we want them to last in the sport we have to teach them to carry themselves correctly and use their muscles as evenly as possible. To get the most out of your horse as an athlete you need to be able to ride him. Getting a horse to trot and canter in a round 20 meter circle, in a balanced and nicely bent frame isn't nearly as easy as it sounds.
