Re: [RC] broken bones, screws, etc. - Lysane CreeI'm not sure how you all do it riding with broken bones! I am not a wimp when it comes to pain, but I could not see myself riding either. Especially if your break requires pins or plates - to me that spells "serious injury." Take the time you need to heal properly! There is always another ride and another day. Two years ago, I broke my wrist/end of the arm bone and while it didn't hurt much when left alone, I almost passed out when a nurse applied a temporary cast and pressed on my arm. It was summer time and my arm itched so bad, I stuck a pen down my cast to scratch and accidentally touched the area where it was broken a bit too roughly and this sudden heat wave came over me, all the blood drained from my face and I felt very ill. I don't see how I could have safely controlled a horse under competition conditions. After 6 weeks in a cast (and this was with *no* pins or plates), it was still somewhat sensitive and I had to do 5-6 weeks of physio before I could get normal use out of it. And I did all of the exercises and was very conscientious about it. When I went back to riding after physio, I could feel a "pulling" in the bone when the horse got too strong. And it took a few more weeks for it to feel really back to normal, although the doctor said it was healed but
fragile after only 6 weeks. The real recovery time was more like 12 weeks and then some.
Now with my four compression fractures, it has been 6 months of no riding. Only now am I healed enough and pain free enough to consider riding. I am itching to get back on a horse, but I am waiting for the icy trails to clear up so I avoid a wipeout. While my body is doing well, I don't know what the psychological side has in store for me when I do get back on. :)
You really should take care of yourself first. Injuries that you don't take care of now will come back to haunt you.
