Re: [RC] gaited arabs? - Karen Sullivan. I've managed to get a fair number of horses to do a fast walk over the years. I think it's a matter of insisting that they do it. I don't give up, and they get it after awhile. Lud says the horse he is riding is not a fast walker, and I tell him he just isn't asking for it, nor insisting. The same horse walks fast for me, because I rode him for almost three years before Lud started riding him. Barbara Hi Barbara, I agree totally, and really dislike a jiggy horse. With Ashley, I really, really worked on the walk, just plain insisted. It took months, and always being firm and consistent and never letting her get her way. However, it worked for me, and I could keep her in a fast walk/single foot. If I started to feel her going into a jig, I would just growl, "walk", before picking up the reins and she would give up!!! Then my daugher started riding her; she liked the prancing (drove me crazy) and allowed her to do it some. Oh well, there went all that training!!!! Some many years later I was riding with the folks who I had given her to, and noticed the daughter was allowing her to jig.....I got on her on that ride, started to growl at her, and lo and behold, she remembered I was the lady who didn't allow it;and went into the fast walk. A really key factor, I believe, is to NOT keep then on a tight rein!!! They have to be able to get their hecks and heads out fairly low to walk fast...if you keep them bunched up they will keep jigging.....so my horses always learned the reward of a loose rein when the walked fast.... Anyway Barbara, I would buy a horse from you anytime! Karen =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
