Re: [RC] gaited arabs? - Barbara McCraryThis is such an interesting discussion! I just mentioned in a previous post that we had a big 1/2 Percheron, 1/2 Morgan that racked when his trot became too fast. As a child, I had a Morgan/draft cross (we think) that did a single-foot gait when she was in a hurry to go home. I had very poor hands then and I would hold her in tight; she would then go into the single-foot instead of a jig or trot. We have two Arabs now that I have "taught" to walk very fast and both will do a running walk uphill (that includes fairly steep hills.) For the fast walk, I ask...correct if they break into a trot, ask, correct, etc. until they understand. I also use a long road that is somewhat downhill all the way, not really steep, just a nice grade. It's on the way home, so I can intensify their desire to get home, but under control. I've managed to get a fair number of horses to do a fast walk over the years. I think it's a matter of insisting that they do it. I don't give up, and they get it after awhile. Lud says the horse he is riding is not a fast walker, and I tell him he just isn't asking for it, nor insisting. The same horse walks fast for me, because I rode him for almost three years before Lud started riding him.Barbara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Laney Humphrey" <laneyhh@xxxxxxxxxxx> Cc: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, February 28, 2005 8:49 PM Subject: Re: [RC] gaited arabs? I owned an arab who taught himself to singlefoot because I wouldn't let him trot going home. I owned another one who jigged for 20 miles once. He probably could have learned to gait if I'd had him long enough to encourage it. The arab I own now has a really slow walk so I decided, during Day 2 of the Bryce Canyon ride last year, that I would teach him to gait in order to speed him up. He did learn he had to walk faster but I doubt he'd ever learn to gait because he just isn't built for it. My Spanish Mustang gets accused of being a Tennessee Walker but had a great trot and would never learn to gait. Each horse is different! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
