Re: [RC] Question - hoof crack to hairline? - DVeritas

Does anyone have any experience with a horse with a crack in the hoof going all the way up to the hairline? (front hoof) Will it eventually grow out?  Can it cause soundness problems?
Hi Naomi,

Fifteen years ago I had my hundred mile horse with a crack that went up from the toe to the coronary band.
I had Richard Klemish (then at CSU) put some screws on either side of the crack and then lace it tightly with cable (like the kind on EZ boots) by looping the cable around each screw (looked like a laced shoe when we got done).
He then put an aerospace epoxy over the whole thing.  We then went about doing fifty's and hundreds.
Eventually, we fixed the crack, redoing the whole procedure about every five or six weeks.

As far as soundness, once the crack got up to the coronary, it did become an issue...an issue, that is, until we did the "lacing" thing.

I believe in today's "modern" horse world, their are hoof treatments which would certainly help you in fixing the problem.

Good luck, Mustang Lady,
