[RC] Lengthening the walk stride - Nancy Sturm

I've always been pretty successful in encouraging horses to develop a nice long-strided walk, but I'm conditioning my daughter's horse this winter because she's busy teaching elementary school, and it isn't going as well as I'd like it to.

This Standardbred gelding does lengthen his stride when I "bump" him with alternate legs, but as soon as I let up encouraging him, he shortens his stride again.    He also slows down if I praise him verbally or touch his neck in praise.

There's a possibility that he's just not fit enough  yet to keep up a nice long-strided walk, but  I'd be happy to hear suggestions.
