Re: [RC] On topic: Cross training my endurance horse - Chris Paus

Oh, I think that's perfect! You know the SRS instructors take the students out on trail to work on their schooling.

I've been working with my young mare on collection. I realized one day when we were out riding that there was a hole in her training. Instead of being soft, she was like a barge to steer when she got antsy about something.

So we want back to 'school' and started learning again to give to the bit.  I can collect her now at the walk. We're still working on trot and canter collection. It was so nice one day when she got jiggy over some horses in a pasture cutting up and acting the fools. Instead of straining against the bit, she tucked her head and did a nice collected, albeit somewhate animatedl, trot... It's very nice to have that tool in our toolbag!

Thought I'd get back on getting ready for the ride season. I had a
wonderful day that I thought I'd share. My dressage instructor (who is an
eventer) does something she calls "dressage outside the box." She does
group dressage lessons on her cross country jumping course. Wyoming's
weather cooperated enough today for us to have one of these clinics. It
was cloudy, but the weather was in the high 30s and low 40s. Most
importantly, there was no wind (a rare occurrence here). I was able to
ride for a couple of hours total and it was wonderful training for my
coming 6 year old gelding. He needs as much work on control, lateral
movement, etc. as possible. He tends to be a little hot. Anyhow, that's
part of what I do in the winter to keep my horses in a little shape (me,
too). Most of the time we have to do our dressage lessons in an indoor
arena after school, but today was one of those wonderful experiences that
i wanted to share. I hate arenas, so when I can be outdoors and still be
working on control issues, it's great. What about the rest of you? Cindy
