Re: [RC] Endurance - longevity bloodlines... - Laney Humphrey

I don't know of an SM that fast, but there may well be one. Who owned/rode Buffalo Buck? MN - Minnesota? Dino had to really go slow for the entire Shore to Shore we did. We then went to Bryce for the XP ride there. He was so much happier in the drier climate. The first day we just flew down the trail! There are lots of SMs in the southeast. They probably handle humidity much better.

I probably should have defined my terms more carefully. I don't consider an endurance horse to be fast unless it can do a 3-4 hour 50 or a 7-8 hour 100. Does anyone know a registered Sp. Mustang that has done either?

As far as the gene pool, since the Sp. Mustang registry only goes back to the 1920's, and registeres many fewier horses than the Arab, QH etc. breeds I stand on my statement. This is a good thing. If you want a Sp. Mustang, you are going to get one. And yes there was enough foundation stock that there is right now enough genetic diversity.

In one of my best years of competition, Ranger (NSH) and Buffalo Buck (Sp. Mustang) were neck and neck for MN Heavy weight champion. Buffalo Buck's owner tried to catch us at the end of a 60 mile ride. We had a really fun 1 mile horse race. Ranger won by a nose. Our ride times for first HW, were about mid pack for LW/FW. Two weeks later he tried the same thing. This time I was fore warned. He gave up sometime during the last loop, when he had not seen me for many miles. Both these rides were hot, humid rides. Ranger gained 10 -20 minutes each vet check.

Anyway, I have great respect for the Sp. Mustang and those who ride them. And yes, not everyone goes as slow as Don Funk.
