My SM, Arrow Dynamic, has over 2000 AERC miles (not in Geo's league, but what the heck!). Even tho' Dino and Geo trace back to horses from the same Wyoming ranch, you have to go back more than 4 generations to find a common ancestor, if there even is one. There are many strains and bloodlines since the horses were found from Chincoteague and Assatague to Florida (Cracker horses) to California. I have known a number that are good solid, slow endurance horses.Just as in any breed, there are faster and slower horses. Compared to arabs, it's true, SMs aren't "fast." For those of us interested in miles, non purebred arabs have a lot to offer. I think Don would agree with me that it would be almost imposible to over ride a Spanish Mustang. They take care of themselves first and won't allow it. I stopped using a heart monitor on Dino years ago because when his heart rate gets higher than he likes, he stops. His recovery is very fast so almost immediately we're on our way again. BTW, he can trot at 10-11 mph for hours where it's flat. His primary drawback is cooling. I would love to find a SM/arab cross with the best features of both breeds. Now, that would be some horse! Laney Arrow Dynamic (H30220)
