Re: [RC] Longivity in Endurance Horses - heidiFayette deCameo is sired by *OMAN, an imported Shagya stallion. His family line has created Olympic jumpers, eventers and dressage horses. The warmblood breeds used Shagya stallions in the 70's and 80's and bred families that are still sought today. RAMZES. a TB/Shagya cross and founder of the "R" line is still influential. The list is too long to list here! *Oman is a very nice horse. But don't forget that Fayette de Cameo is also out of the very high quality CMK mare Fille de Cailana who has a very respectable endurance record with pretty fair longevity herself. The endurance breeders of today need to recognize that the Shagya breed has already been bred for longivity and also for all of the qualities desired in the distance horse of today. As is the classic Arabian. I don't think this thread was started to try to highlight any one breed of horse, but rather how to breed within a breed or even crossbreed for longevity. Shagyas are certainly a breed deserving of respect, and have roots much closer to distance riding (as does the Arabian) than do some other breeds, but the question of breeding for endurance longevity is more about being able to pinpoint the best individuals, IMO, rather than to get into a battle of breeds. FWIW, the horses sought after to help to "replenish" the Shagya after WWII (the depletion that you mentioned) were usually old-line Arabs, many of which should be sought after in Arabian endurance pedigrees as well.
