RE: [RC] Feed--Rice Bran ratios - Adam and JannelleAs long as you have at least a 1:1 ratio, you're ok. Up to a 2:1 (calcium/phos) is even better, especially in horses that need more calcium (young horses, nursing mares, performance horses). From what I understand, it takes one part calcium for each phos. to metabolize. So you need AT least that 1:1 ratio. The alfalfa will balance the ride bran but the rice bran I use has already been balanced. And I heard many others say their rice bran was balanced already so it's good to check that out and not just assume that there is an imbalance. I'm trying to fatten my horse up right now too, and I'm using Nutrena Empower. I was using rice bran, but my friend informed me of this alternative. Empower is better because the phosphorus-calcium ratio is balanced, whereas rice bran isn't balanced. I feed beet pulp, and a lot of grass/alfalfa hay as well. Empower is made up of high-fat rice bran, flaxseed, trace minerals and some vitamin E and selenium as well. It says on the label that it is 12% protein, 22% crude fat, and 6% fiber.
