Re: [RC] Proposed new laws on practice of Vetinary Medicine - Truman Prevatt

Ed,

My understanding is that has always been the law in FL. A few years ago one of the equine massage therapist that advertised in Horse and Pony - a statewide equine newspaper - got a call from a vet demanding she cease. She stopped advertising. While that is the law there are still eqine chiro's, equine massage therapist, in fact there is an equine massage therapy school in Ocala. I haven't seen any farriers running for the state line.

My farrier said that this law runs counter to the laws associated with FL race tracks. To shoe at FL tracks a farrier has to be certified by the FL racing commission - which is totally independent to the vet board. Many farriers in FL are certified. My vet says it's stupid and someone has their head where the sun doesn't shine.

So while I think the law is there, it doesn't seem to be enforced and given we have as great a shortage of vets as farriers I doubt if farriers are taking one penny away from vets. I've yet to talk to a vet that wants to shoe a horse or be called out when you need to reset your shoes.

There has been a move afoot for vet boards to get their arms around "alternative therapies." There have been tires to regulate feed supplements as "drugs." I don't know if it's good or bad or indifferent, but it seems more like a great exercise in futility. The vet boards don't have the resources and budgets to regulate what is important - why are they trying to take on even more that they can't do? In these days where there are issues with bioterrorism targeting food supplies - they've got their hands full doing what they should be doing.

The specific claim that interested me is:
"More states than Montana are currently under legislative fire.....In June 2004, Florida passed a bill ...that all farriers (horsehoers) must be licensed through and under the control of their state veterinary board. I have received reports of farriers moving from the state of Florida, and leaving communities...without adequate hoof care."

My question is to Florida Ridecampers: Has the above really happened? What is the Florida law? Or is this a scare tactic by a practicinar of an Alternative therapy?
