[RC] Proposed new laws on practice of Vetinary Medicine - Sisu West RanchThe February issue of "Rocky Mountain Rider", page 38 has an article by Coreen Kelly, owner, Western Montana School of Equine Massage, Corvallis, MT titled: "Why Montanans Should be Concerned by the Veterinarians' Monopoly Movement on Animal Alternative Therapies" The Rocky Mountain rider as a regional all-Breed horse Magazine. It is distributed free, and serves mostly to advertise Stallions. The article claims that the American Veterinary Medical Association has a model vet practice law that would bring everything under the umbrella of Veterinary practice. The specific claim that interested me is: "More states than Montana are currently under legislative fire.....In June 2004, Florida passed a bill ...that all farriers (horsehoers) must be licensed through and under the control of their state veterinary board. I have received reports of farriers moving from the state of Florida, and leaving communities...without adequate hoof care." My question is to Florida Ridecampers: Has the above really happened? What is the Florida law? Or is this a scare tactic by a practicinar of an Alternative therapy? Note: I do not favor, or oppose extension of vet practice laws to include alternative therapies. I do think that farriery is something that has never been considered part of veterinary medicine and should stay that way.
