[RC] RC: Who went riding today? - Opal PerryI did! I did!!
Actually, I got to go on a short one last Sunday, but yesterday (Saturday) was SO pretty, I just couldn't stand being in the indoor arena another minute! I talked my niece (25..lol) into going along, and we saddled up and headed out. The horses were pretty goofy to start.. especially Tucker, the gelding she was on. Sal was actually pretty good, but because my niece is mostly a "can't we just walk?" rider, we couldn't move out much. (I don't blame her for that, she had a nasty spill while in college and broke her back, has a steel rod in it now and forever.) We have to ride a couple of miles on backroads til we get to the state forest, and EVERY time we got to any kind of grade Sal and Tucker wanted to take off.. finally I let Sal trot, suddenly Tucker comes blasting by, running full tilt. Poor Rachael had no control over the little bas**rd.. she was trying her best to get him to slow down, but he was wound for sound. This was
his first ride (other than little bits in the indoor) since Thanksgiving and he wanted to GO! As soon as he went barreling past us, Sal lost his mind and decided to give chase.. <sigh> I lost a stirrup in the bucking fit that ensued because I held him back, got myself some nice bruises and my horse got a spanking.
It got better after that though.. Rach finally relaxed and then so did Tucker. We rode about 18 miles, and on the final leg back we did finally get to let them really trot. The trails were so-so.. lots of snow back there in the trees, but it was pretty. We had a couple of slippery spots, but nothing too terribly bad. I was just glad to be out on my horse in the sunshine!
I am lucky, having the indoor, since my horse is in incredible shape, but honestly, it is SO BORING to ride in there I have lost all incentive. I feel so pumped up now.. spring might actually show up!!
Hope you all got to get out too! (Gonna be in the low 50's today.. guess what I am going to be doing??)
