Sent out a short note about an hour ago, to
several vendors I developed a relationship with during my book process and
immediately the following all replied with "Yes, send ad rates!"
Long Riders Gear
Vettec
Equipedic
Running Bear
I sent out about a dozen from that list I sent
you. I propose that we come up with something similar in rates to my book
with the emphasis on the fact that your book is timeless and won't be tossed in
favor or a new copy like mine. The only thing I guess to worry about in that
case is 20 years from now someone trying to call Long Riders Gear and they've
retired :)
Besides the charges for putting your book together,
which I'm going to say will not be more than a grand, including cover layout
(I've typically received between 2,500-3,000 per book), I propose 20% of the ad
revenue, which is the going rate for ad salesmen these days. I have a stack of
10 ISBN numbers, one of which I've used, so that's a $250 fee you won't have to
pay. Plus I'll take care of all the Library of Congress and bar code junk
included in the layout price.
Obviously, since we're publishing it under my
publishing name, I'd like to sell it on my site. We can figure out what's
reasonable for a cut of that and handling the shipping, which of course, I'm
pretty good at by now :) Most resellers get 40-50% which I think is RIDICULOUS!
Amazon gets 55% of sales. Boy, don't THEY think they're special! I'm thinking
more like 25% per book sale on my website or whatever I sell somewhere else. And
maybe like a $1.00 for handling or something. Whatever you sell of the copies
you'll have on hand is your deal 100%.
I'm still thinking about how we can share in the
costs/profits of t-shirts, etc. So many ways to go ...
