RE: [RC] Question re Running up hills-easiest way? - Dream WeaverAnother old-timer had it figured out a bit better than Bill did. Cliff Lewis once wrote an article called "The Fat Man's Secret Weapons." He listed rocks, downhill, and darkness. By teaching a horse to be agile through the rocks and to go downhill in a balanced manner, and by being bold in the dark, he could make time in areas where his weight had the least impact on the horse. ...and one only needs to ride one of Cliff's rides to know how much he adores those rocks! ;) That might work well on one day rides or hundreds, but if you are riding like that on multidays the odds greatly increase that you'll not make all 5 days or will take home a sore horse. Especially if you run (anything faster than a walk) the horse downhill thru the rocks and then walk on the flat or good footing sections. I see that a lot and don't think people realize they are doing it. Karen in NV P.S. and actually Cliff's last 3 day ride had quite a bit of excellent footing, it was nice! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
