I'm looking at all this the same way.  I have Peruvian Pasos and the 
norm in that breed is barefoot -- horses can't go in the show ring 
with shoes (shoes could be manipulated to affect gait, which is the 
main thing they are judged on) and the breed myth is that they 
*never* need shoes.  But even in Peru they will shoe a horse if it 
needs shoes to avoid excessive wear.  It's no biggie.
