Re: [RC] Barefpoot at WEC in Dubai - heidiYou may not be aware that a US owned/trained/crewed barefoot horse finished in the top half of WEC finishers in Dubai. DJB Wersus was ridden by a delightful Japanese lady, and knocked 2 hours off his previous personal best for a 100. He finished in very good shape, and really impressed local farriers. I'm not surprised--the WEC venue was about as ideal as one could ask for a barefoot horse. That also underscores the differences between the trails available in Dubai and many of the US trails that writers have cited here. And while personally I don't buy the argument that the sandy trail at the WEC is not an endurance ride, anyone would be a fool to not understand the differences between that trail and the majority of US trails. FWIW, Darolyn also rides and conditions in an area that is just about ideal, and also uses shoes when she goes to competitions with other sorts of terrain. And another FWIW--I've talked to some of the Texas vets who want to weep over how sore the bruised distal branches of the flexor tendons are on too many of these horses. One of the problems with too many of the wonderful "success" stories (don't know if it is true about Shari's or not) is that they rarely detail how much work and conditioning it takes to GET a barefoot horse to the point of being able to compete successfully without hurting himself--they instead too often urge everyone to shed the shoes, and too many horses are suffering a great deal as a result. My only interest here is in seeing the horses not get hurt--and as I alluded to in a previous post, most of the competitors I've vetted who have ridden barefoot have eventually either opted for shoes or have decided that the sport is too much for their barefoot horses and have not continued.
