RE: [RC] Trot vs canter - heidi

Funny - my daughter and I were having a version of this discussion this
morning. She rides an off-the-track Standardbred who paced at the
track and can both trot and pace but does not have a well-developed
canter. Are we correct in assuming that he's going to be more efficient
pacing or trotting?

Yep, I'd bet that the Standardbred will do better at the trot. Long
selection to trot has made that their most efficient gait. In my
observations vetting, the Standardbreds do best when not made to go with
the Arabs--the best Arabs will switch back and forth between trot and
canter, and at canter will go a bit faster than the good Standardbreds,
and at the trot, will go slower. So the Standardbred will do better to
just capitalize on his trot, wave the Arabs goodbye when they canter, and
then pass them again when they trot.
