Re: [RC] deadly bicyclist/ - Barbara McCraryI could not agree more! We horsemen are the minority, and if push comes to shove, I fear we would lose out to the majority. We patrol on horseback for a local State Park, and we scrupulously observe good manners and courtesy and either stop or slow to a walk for cyclists and hikers. We smile, say good day, ask where they came from, where have they camped the night before, let kids pet the horses, whatever fits into the conversation. And we are in uniform, so we are taken as "rangers", even though we are not. We certainly are not peace officers, as most of the rangers are trained to be nowadays (at least here in CA), but since we are associated with rangers, we want to present a friendly demeanor rather than an authoritarian one. There are, unfortunately, a few of those in the park system. So far, the multi-use is working in this park, and we hope to keep it that way. If we ever lost horsemen's rights to this park, Swanton Pacific would be toast. If we were to insist that we have trails for "horses only," I believe we would have FAR fewer trails open to horses at all. We'd be shut out, not the bicycles and hikers. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
