I have never said it should be called “endurance.”
It’s not and I agree with that point entirely. What I object to is
calling it a training ride. (that’s where the belittling attitude comes
into play) You don’t pay for a training ride. That’s
what you do before you show up for the competition. This is an event,
complete with rules and awards, so quit trying to belittle it for the VERY
small percentage of newcomers that don’t know what they’re
doing. If people like that are really such an issue, then perhaps first
time riders should have restrictions placed on them – like they must be
sponsored; they can ride, but not place; they have to volunteer or pass a rules
test before they can ride, etc.

The LD ride is and should remain classified as an entry level ride
instituted for use by new riders and or new horses to help them learn the sport
of endurance. Of course the LD can be used by anyone for any purpose they want
but it is not an endurance ride as spelled out by the AERC rules. If you like
it that's fine, enjoy it, I have and you don't have to move up but an LD ride
is exactly what it says, limited distance, not endurance and for YOU definitely
not a training ride.

But it's NOT "only" a training ride. My mare and I are
way past the training stage and we prefer to ride this distance. We are
competing and just because I'm not the most competitive person out there,
doesn't mean I'm not. 50's & 100's are no longer the be all and end
all of distance riding. I may never move up, for various reasons, but
mostly because I LIKE this distance. It fits me and it's definitely NOT a
training ride.

I think LD is and should remain an ONLY TRAINING ride.
I also know some of the Vets and RM's and support their position 100%. Most of
us are not rocking the boat because we like the boat the way it is.

Kim, I have asked RMs about LDBC. Most
RMs will go along with the vets on this issue. As stated previously, there are
some very well known & outspoken vets and RMs in the West and Pacific
Southwest regions who are adamant about LD being ONLY TRAINING rides. Most riders
will not rock the boat. Obviously, I'm not one of them. And yes, I know most of
these vets & RMs.
