[RC] L.O.V.E. ride follow-up - Dede JohnsonFor those that had emailed me asking about my horse or telling me they had a horse with some same symptoms as mine, I'll give you "the rest of the story". Horse was presented 10 days after the ride with diarrhea, loss of appetite, and slight temp. The initial thought was possibly salmonella so a fecal sample was submitted and supportive care began. a day and a half later, the blood panel showed elevated monocytes, a possible indication for Potomac Horse Fever, so the plan changed and Oxytetracyline was started, along with the continuing supportive care. Then, when the fecal came back, there was a high number of clostridium toxins that had been excreted. (I was told clostridium is normal in the GI tract, but not normal to excrete toxins from it). So, the thinking is now it was more a clostridium infection, and not PHF, although the vets are at a loss for the high level of monocytes. She has been doing well and I brought her home yesterday, and of course am continuing to monitor her manure, temp., and overall attitude. Wish I knew for sure what the cause was, but some things are like that. Happy thanksgiving to all..............Dede Johnson and Ashley (glad to be home) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
