Carla, when I started distance riding in
the 80's I went from doing Open NATRC rides, to 50 mile endurance rides. Never
did do a 25 miler until a few years ago. NATRC established a great base for my
horse, and I learned lots about my horse, and myself, and felt ready to try a
50. There are opinions on both sides as to how to start. I'd say that most who
are experienced with the sport, and are starting a "new" horse, very often do
skip 25 mile rides. Many feel taking a horse to a multi-day is the best way for
it to learn about the sport, and how to take care of its self. Those new
to the sport, indeed, need to gain knowledge about the sport, and 25 mile rides,
or Competitive Trail rides often give them that knowledge to take on the next
level if the feel the desire. But, of course they won't gain the
knowledge, unless the seek it. You will have folks who are clueless in all
distances and organizations.
I think for the most part, riders who have done the
sport for a little while, will have a feel for when it is right for the next
level or distance
