Re: [RC] Introducing horse to a new herd - rides2farAfter a couple days, I introduce my bottom of the pecking order horse, INTO the small field, which this new horse, is feeling is his home. Your method makes sense, but I've started doing things a little differently. Maybe partly because I only have one open field. Since the bottom horse seems most threatened, it's usually the most hateful to the new horse. The "Yeah, I'm third but I'll never be 4th by golly!" theory. I now like to take Kaboot (top of the order) with me to get the new horse. If I could I'd take them on a long trail ride together. Camping would be even better. Then they ride together in the trailer home. By the time we get home they're kinda buddied up. When the new horse comes in the top dog is the one who keeps the others in line. Seems to me that though Kaboot will sort of herd his herd away from the new guy, he doesn't get aggressive towards him and tends to make the others stay back from him. Sooner or later he lets up and the lower ones have to let the new guy know he's beneath them but it seems to cut down on the drama.
