RE: [SPAM] [RC] beet pulp warning - heidiIt's extremely rare for food to be in there. My vet(from a sizable clinic) hadn't seen it .I've seen no reference in my research. My vet is very familiar with beet pulp because she's a former endurance rider but said she's never fed it because she's "seen the wrecks" as she put it. She suspects that the sticky, prone-to-packing nature of it caused it to get stuck to his pharynx and eventually work its way into the pouches. Indeed, it is extremely rare, and I would submit that it is not a matter of what sort of feed as much as it is something intrinsically wrong with an individual horse that allows feed to get into its gutteral pouches. I certainly would not feed beet pulp of the same consistency again to THAT HORSE, nor would I feed it any number of concentrates/grains. But to suggest that it is a problem intrinsic to the beet pulp is IMO illogical. As a vet AND as an endurance rider (not even former--still at it), I've never seen "wrecks" of this sort with beet pulp--the only thing close to "wrecks" that I've seen with anything of the sort have been chokes/colics from feeding things DRY at checks, when the horse is already somewhat dehydrated in addition to wanting to wolf down food. There's no reason to feed anything dry at a check, and certainly not beet pulp--it is best in a sloppy mash.
