I hadn't found information on the source, but the family of viruses  
is retrovirus like HIV. Found some very interesting discussions of  
the relationships between HIV and other similar retroviruses that  
infect other animals, such as cats and monkeys. The equine is not as  
closely related as the feline or monkey virus, so is no danger to  
humans.
