RE: [RC] Pigeon fever - heidiWith all the talk about abscesses and infecting the ground for years, is Pigeon fever is related to Strangles? No. Strangles is caused by a bug called Strepococcus equi. Pigeon fever is caused by a bug called Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. That said, there is some evidence that horses vaccinated for strangles have a somewhat higher resistance to pigeon fever, so even though the bugs are different, they may share some common antigens.
