I would agree with you... except... oh, about 15 years ago I purchased a mare named Phobia. She is the sweetest, gentlest mare. She's never really been trained to ride, but will pack around anyone who gets on her -- even if years go between one ride and the next. Her entire show career consists of a couple leadline classes with a friend's friend's kids! That's the kind of mare she is. So, if I'd been hindered by her name, I'd have missed out on having this fantastic mare & her babies (one of which is my main endurance horse, Phlyrt). FWIW, I believe she was probably named by someone clueless about the word "phobia." Her name is a blend of her parents' names: El Bahia x Phoebenei. Someone must have thought it sounded cute... I've also never come up with a good nick-name for her, so she's actually called by her horrible name, "Phobia," as her barn name as well.
