Yes, they did ose a good customer. up until the moldy feed issue, I had written them a testimonial with photos of how well my boy was doing on their feed. I don't know what changed, but a horse who would always gallop up to his feed pan  would just sniff at it and walk away. I started him on the Kent product and he's back to galloping up for his dinner and he's put weight back on. I was getting very worried about him. I'm not going to risk his health again to go back and give Purina a try. It's not worth it to me.

 

I still do use a Purina product.. I use their "Country Acres" sweet feed. I feed very little of it. A 50 pound bag lasts me 2 weeks among 8 horses!  The stallion and his little weanling companion are the only ones who get any supplemental feeds. The others are embarrasingly fat on pasture and hay.

I too have experianced problems with Equine Senior, but not to the fault of the manufacture, this was the fault of the retailer.  Any type of dampness can result in feed getting moldly.  I actually had one go bad on me and it was in my own tack room, which is dry as a bone, but I think it could had gotten wet sometime between the factory and getting to the retailer.  (or even getting damp at the retailer).

 

I found their testing and quality assurance at the factory level to be top notch. 

 

Its good that you were able to find a product that works for your horses, and too bad that the rep didn't do more to help you out or investigate the issue further, they lost a good customer.

Well, apparently, not picky enough! this summer I got several bags of moldy Equine senior. boujght them from different stores, so it wasn't a problem with just one store. My stallion was getting sicker and sicker until I figured it out and switched feeds. I've also found huge chunks of sticky molasses and who knows what else in bags of their senior feed.

 

They may have the best research in the industry, but look at the labels on thier feed and then labels on other brands of feed. Purina will never give you exact ingredients... it's "grain byproducts" forage products, etc. I'm now buying "Kent' brand feeds. They tell you the exact percentage of rice bran, of beet pulp, of alfalfa, etc in each bag of feed. With Purina's loose lableing, they can't be held to a certain amount of any one type of grain or forage. They can buy what's cheapest on the market.

 

Their response to me when I wrote them a bout the moldy feed was less than helpful. I'm gone.

I worked for a major grocery chain (in advertising, not stocking shelves
thank you) and our brand of dog food was Purina that didn't make it
through their inspection process...like the puppy chow from the bottom of
the silo where there were a few too many broken pieces. They're
apparently pretty particular.
